A Miami woman who spent 42 years in a coma has died.

The world's longest surviving coma patient passed away at her home in Miami Gardens on Wednesday, aged 59.

Edwarda O'Bara was a high school student on January 3, 1970 when she fell ill, threw up her medicine and slipped into a diabetic coma. The date was significant for the family as it was her parents' 22nd wedding anniversary.

Before the teen lost consciousness, she asked her mother, Kaye O'Bara, to never leave her side. She kept her promise, taking care of her daughter until she died five years ago. That's when Colleen O'Bara stepped in and continued taking care of her sister in the Miami Gardens home.

Her father, Joe, had a heart attack in 1972 and died in 1976, at the age of 50. Her mother, Kaye, died in 2008, at the age of 81.

Kay O'Bara was a devout Catholic who said she felt the presence of the Virgin Mary in her daughter's room.

Kay O'Bara's story inspired a book by Dr Wayne Dyer entitled "A Promise Is A Promise: An Almost Unbelievable Story of a Mother's Unconditional Love and What It Can Teach Us".
