Doris Fay Smith of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Thursday, November 22, 2012, at the Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 80 years.
Doris Fay Smith was born on February 11, 1932, in Hulbert, Oklahoma, to William Claud and Gertha Pauline (Potts) Steelmon. She grew up in Lost City, Oklahoma, attending Lost City Elementary School. In the early 1940s she moved with her family to Blackwell where she attended Blackwell Public Schools graduating from Blackwell High School in 1950. On January 3, 1950, she married John R. Smith Jr., in Wellington, Kansas, and they made their home in Blackwell. She worked for Nickerson Farms as a cook, Ellison Drugs and S.H. Kress Department Store. She received her L.P.N. license in the early 1970s from Pioneer Area Vo-Tech in Ponca City. Following completion of her nursing certification began working at Blackwell General Hospital as a nurse and worked there for over twenty years retiring in the surgical department. She was preceded in death by her husband on January 4, 1991, and she continued to make Blackwell her home. She enjoyed going to casinos, camping, fishing, cooking, and loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by one son, Kelly Joe Smith and wife Cindy of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Debra Lynn Courtney and husband Max of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Mary Jolanta Rose and husband Max of Alva, Oklahoma; one sister-in-law, Sharon Wilson of Blackwell, Oklahoma; thirteen grandchildren, Max Lee Rose, Brandi Evans, Chera Harrison, Heather McClendon, Kara Smith, Skylar Osgood, Kelsy Sandborn, Levi Rose, Remington Rose, Wyatt Courtney, Tiffany Smith, and Brittany Smith; twenty great grandchildren; a sister, Lola Cooper of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a brother, Wendell Steelmon of Enid, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was also preceded by her parents; a brother, Vernon Steelmon; a sister, Reba Stout; and two infant brothers; and a grandson, Jonathan Smith.
Services are scheduled for Monday, November 26th at 2:00 p.m. in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin Bookout of the First Free Will Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be, Wyatt Courtney, Levi Rose, Remington Rose, Max Lee Rose, Kara Smith and Carl Evans.
Honorary Casketbearers will be the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Doris Smith.
