Married John Whittelsey
John Whittelsey was the cashier at the Northampton National Bank on 25 January 1876 when it was robbed in what has been described as the largest bank robbery in U.S. history (in today's dollars).
At midnight on 24 January the seven disguised bank robbers broke into his house on Elm Street and tied up the seven members of the household. According to Mrs Whittelsey, the bank robbers were very polite to the ladies, except for the maid, and insisted that all the women dress & don extra stockings to avoid being cut by the ropes. The other adults later testified that Laura remained very calm while pleading that John not be injured and took the time to ask the man tying her up about his "domestic situation".
Shortly after the men left to guard the captives left, Laura worked herself free and her screams for help were heard by passersby.
