Pieterke is the third of five children and the first of two daughters, named for her maternal grandmother, Pieterke van Maar.
On 4 May 1893 Pieterke arrived with her parents Pieter and Cornelia Alberda and her siblings Willem, Liefke and Hendrik on the SS Spaarndam at New York. Their destination is Bozeman, the seat of Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana.

On 25 February 1909 Nellie [Pieterke] Alberda married at Manhattan, Gallatin County, at the age of 22 years to the four years older Ralph Vandyken, who had Dutch parents too. In the beginning of 1910 Ralph Van Dyken, 28 y, lived with his wife Nellie, 23 y, who immigrated in 1893 from the Netherlands, at School District 52 of Gallatin County.
Nellie died there on 24 June 1912 at the age of 26 years.
Ralph remarried on 22 Januari 1913 to Sena C Kamerman.
