Robert Henry George III, a longtime physical education teacher and award-winning varsity wrestling coach at De La Warr High School died Sunday of heart failure at home.
Mr. George, 64, of 30 Gill Drive, Robscott Manor, was a physical education teacher for 30 years in the De La Warr school district. He was former athletic director and principal at De Law Warr High and later an administrator for the school district. He was also a member of the district's board of education.
He coached varsity wrestling and baseball. He was named the 1966 state Wrestling Coach of the Year, and in 1982, he was named state Wrestling Association Coach of the Year. As baseball coach, he helped produce four consecutive Blue Hen Conference championship teams. He also organized the school's athletic association.
He resigned as wrestling coach in 1968 to pursue his masters degree in administration at West Chester (Pa.) State College.
He was a foster parent for more than 10 years with the state Department of Services for Children, Youths and Their Families. He was a member and elder at Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church and charter member of Glasglow Reformed Presbyterian Church.
He was former director of Brandywine Springs YMCA Day Camp during the summer and former chairman of the state fitness committee, Delaware Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Mr. George earned a bachelor's degree in 1953 at the University of Delaware.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Virginia; three sons, Robert IV of Elkton, Md., Steve of Homasassa, Fla., and Jonathan of Wilmington; two daughters, Lauretta Painter of North East, Md., and Ginny Sparkien of New Castle; three brothers, Jim of Odessa, Dave of Dover and John of Middletown; two sisters, Eleanor Watts of Newark and Mary Dilks of Wilmington; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday in Glasglow Reformed Presbyterian Church, Delaware 896, Glasglow, Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, De Point Highway, Minquadale.
