John Fletcher Crabtree was born in Lee County, Virginia on April 13, 1824. When a young man, John moved to Jackson County, Missouri, where he met and then married Elizabeth Davis on Nov 28, 1844. The couple traveled west to California in 1852, and first homesteaded in Contra Costa County, before finally settling in Seigler Canyon, Lake County in 1866. Sometime between 1885-1890, John & Elizabeth, with sons, Alphonzo & William, moved to the Twin Valleys/Hot Springs area to join son, Orin Crabtree, who had discovered the hot springs 10 - 15 years earlier by following a well used Indian trail.

Due to an error in recording the property, it couldn't be determined on which of the Crabtree's property the hot springs were located, so it was never developed as a Hot Springs Resort. But, they invited invalids to try the medicinal qualities of the water. (Orin's daughter, Lottie May, married one of the invalids who came to "take the waters".)

At Crabtree Hot Springs, John built his home about 150 yards southwest from the junction of Rice Fork or the Eel River and Salt Creek, on a bench on land.

Between 1902-1904 John and Elizabeth moved to a two acre farm in Clover Valley (northeast of Upper Lake), where they raised vegetables.

In addition to the children listed below, they also had:
Volara (1848-1860-?)
Theodore Brewen (1850-1931)
Missouri (1859-1867)
David Henry (1870-1871)
