Born in Ungarn (Austria-Hungary) to Solamon Fischl and Marie Stern, he arrived in the United States on July 9, 1887, and was naturalized on October 8, 1894. He listed his occupation as an Austrian tailor.

He married July 1, 1890 to Miss Sarah Faur Feuerstein, and they had two children: William "Moses", and Bertha. The couple divorced by 1900.

He lived out his life in New York City, living first with his widowed mother and his children, and later with son William and his family.

He is buried in the Mount Richmond Cemetery, Staten Island, Richmond County, New York.
