SUFFERED A STROKE OF APOPLEXY
One of the Best Known Residents of the Thrid Ward Expired Suddenly
-Coroner Called, But No Inquest Necessary
Stricken with apoplexy while eating dinner to-day at his home. No 18 S??? Street, James Garrett, one of the well known residents and familiar figures of the Third ward died at 1 o'clock this afternoon. Coroner ?? was called and took the statements of the relatives who were present but decided to hold no inquest.
James Garrett was born 74 years ago in Ballyfin, in the county of Laois, Ireland. He came to this country with his mother when he was a ?. He came directly to this city and ?...? been a resident. A friend to every man, woman and child in the region of his home, the loss, ? as it will be, was best expressed by a neighbor who, when the news was announced said: "It will not seem like the Third ward when Mr. Garrett is gone."
Mr. Garrett has been in retirement for the last fifteen years but during the time his involvement in the affairs of this community has not diminished. His staunch Repubicanism made him a man to be figured with in the political life of his district.
Mr. Garrett's first business was conducted in partnership with Mr. Lud???? many years ago on Pearl Street. It was a grocery store and soon he gained entire control. He afterward moved his grocery to the corner of Cornelia and Spring Streets, where he continued in business until his retirement fifteen years ago.
Forty-seven years ago in this city, Mr. Garrett was married to Elisabeth Dann, who died in 1889. Three years later he was unted to Miss Jane E. Reynolds who passed away on Jun 11 of last year. Although he has not been in ill health since that time, his relatives have no doubt that her death had much to do with a lessening interest in the affairs of this life. The only survivors are a daughter, Mrs. W. H. Clarke of Syracuse and a granddaughter, Elisabeth Clarke of the same city. He was a member of the Calvary Epsicopal Church.
