John emigrated to the United States in 1847. He volunteeered for army service in the Civil War by enlisted in the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 5, 1862, for a term for 3 years at Cleveland, Ohio. His name appears as "Defrieze" in the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers. Occupation: Seaman. Residence: Main Street. Mustered into Company G(as "Defriez"), he transferred to the U.S. Navy, by Order of the War Department, June 24, 1864. John served aboard the USS Great Western, USS Benton, and USS Red Rover on the Mississippi River. He married Mary Denbow Crisp, March 28, 1877, at Hamilton, IA. Her father was Solomon and mother, Elizabeth Cubbage. His application for an army/navy invalid pension dated March 16, 1891 was not issued. Mary, his widow, applied for a pension, April 11, 1918 which was issued as Certificate #1861614. His name appears as "Defries" on Panel #14 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio.
