Cleveland Youth Drowns at Scotch Lake, Pal Goes Down in Rescue Attempt
The tragic drowning of Leo Androli, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Androli, of Cleveland, occurred at Scotcvh Lake, a few miles southwest of Le Center Friday afternoon.
According to the information received by County Coroner D. E. Cole, of Le Center, the lad in company with three other youths, Jerry Lamont, Herman Boldt, Jr., and Roger Lloyd, all of Cleveland, had gone to the lake for a swim.
They had bought inflated inner tubes with them, with which they floated out into deeper water. Elroy Lloyd, brother of Roger, had just driven up to the lake shore when he heard a sharp report, apparently from the inner tube which collapsed leaving the Androli lad out in deep water. He was able to swim a little, but went down before he could get back to shallow water.
Herman Boldt, who could not swim, was closest to Leo, and tried to dive and help him, but Herman also began to go under and Jerry Lamont was able to paddle over close enough to give him the inner tube. By this time Leo had gone down.
Elroy Lloyd then phoned Cleveland and the firemen from the village rushed to the scene, but the body had been in the water about two hours before it was found. Pulmotors were brought over from Madison Lake and St. Peter and artificial respiration was also tried for almost an hour, but without success.
Leo attended high school in Cleveland the past year as a freshman and was on the squad for baseball, kittenball and football. He was active in Boy Scout work, and was well liked by his many friends and schoolmates.
His tragic death is mourned by his parents and his sister, Melva Mae, 16 years old.
Funeral services were held at Cleveland Methodist Church Monday afternoon, June 30, Rev. Harris and Rev. W. J. Davidson officiating.
"The Old Rugged Cross," and "God Be With You," were sung by Mrs. Roy Harris and Mrs. Chas. Cooley, with accompaniment by Mrs. W. J. Davidson. Many floral and memorial offerings were given by relatives, neighbors and numerous friends of the grief-stricken family.
Serving as pallbearers were Jim Lamont, Dick Reddemann, Wally Brunswold, Elroy Lloyd, John Rohlfing, Orrin Davis.
Besides the many people from the Cleveland community attending the funeral, the grandparents, uncles and aunts from Janesville, Elysian, Waterville, Mankato and Minneapolis as well as other relatives from distant points attend the funeral.
