George Wesley Johnston was born in Bellingham, WA on June 29, 1930. He was the third child and only son born to Ralph "Shorty" and Hilda Dahlberg Johnston. He had three sisters: Marjorie Johnston Kratz, Mildred Johnston Perry and Elaine Johnston Barnett.

George had an innate ability for music. He played the piano and organ all his life. He played for church services and was often called upon to play for weddings and funerals. He also had a great love for trains and traveled on them whenever possible.

During the Korean War, George served as a dedicated Chaplain's Assistant and played piano for worship services in Korea. For the last three years, he played the organ at the First Christian Church in McMinnville, OR.
