John M. Duncan
John M. Duncan, 77, lifelong resident of Clay county, died Oct. 17, at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness of several years. Funeral services were held Oct 20 at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. The Rev. C. A. Claypool officiated at the services and Masonic Rites were given. Glenn Durst, vocalist sang "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset" accompanied by Gretchen Hagedorn. The grandsons, Gary and John Carlson, Greg Duncan and Richard Wickstrom, Lee Collins and Charles Thorson served as pallbearers; two other grandsons, John and Ken Duncan, served as honorary pallbearers. Internment was in North Lawn Cemetery at Spencer.
John Morley Duncan, youngest of 10 children, was born Feb. 27, 1888, to Mr. and Mrs. John G. Duncan of Dickens. He was united in marriage to Anna C. Dam Jan. 24, 1912. Six children were born to this union, all of whom survive. Mrs. Anna Duncan died Sept. 23, 1954. Mr. Duncan married Lois Carter Batcher Sept. 24, 1957, and spent the remaining years of his life on a farm near Langdon enjoying the affection and care given to him by his wife and family.
Over the years, Mr. Duncan gave unselfishly of his time to community activities-primarily Farm Bureau and 4-H work. He took much pride in working with his neighbors in Lake township in preparing the exhibits for the Clay County Fair and was a familiar face to countless boys and girls in the 4-H club over the years. He joined the Rich Lloyd Lodge and Eastern Star of Terril; Royal Arch and Azotus Comandery, Spencer; Scottish Rite Bodies and Abu Bekr Shrine, Sioux City.
Mr. Duncan is survived by his wife, Lois; his two sons, Elwin R., Ames and John Robert, Dickens; four daughters, Mrs. Alice Smith, West Palm Beach, Fla.; Mrs. Lucille Carlson, Spirit Lake; Mrs. Ethek Wickstrom, Chicago, Ill.; and Mrs. JoAnn Timmer, Highland Park, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Helen Gerdeman, Dickens, and Mrs. Leona Trotter, Casper, Wyo.; nine grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Alice Sommers of Dickens, and a brother Arthur of Acampo, Calif.
He will be greatly missed in the community where he leaves many other relatives, friends and acquaintances.
