Jane was the fourth of seven children of William Cumming, a farmer and innkeeper, and Elspet McHardy. Her last name has also been spelled Cummins.

She was baptized on March 31, 1819 in Corgarff, Strathdon, Aberdeenshire.

She married John Reid on June 8, 1849 in Old Machar (now Woodside), Aberdeen. They had four children: Ann about 1851, John Cummins in 1853, Jane in 1855 and Isabella in 1858

She died of general debility at 1 Bridge Street, Woodside.

Inscription

Erected by Herbert and Adam Ritchie in memory of JOHN REID, contractor, Woodside died 1889 aged 68 years; his wife JANE CUMMING died 1891 aged 70 years. And their daughter ANN REID died 1931 aged 80 years, and her husband ALEXANDER PHILIP died 1932 aged 83 years and their son ALEXANDER REID died 1886 aged 5 years.
