MRS. MARIE SCHMITT

Mrs. Cordia Marie Schmitt of Hiawatha, Kansas died May 4, 1991, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital. She had cancer.

She became ill in November and had treatments of various kinds and spent much time in the hospital, but all that was done was to no avail.

Marie, daughter of Arch and Hazel Overfield Barber, was born September 12, 1917 at Wheatland, Wyoming. She moved with her parents to Horton when quite young and grew up there.

She was married to Virgil L. Schmitt March 24, 1934, at Topeka and they started housekeeping in Fairview and lived in town and in this area several years before moving to a farm near Powhattan where they lived until moving to Hiawatha. She worked 18 years at the Farm and Home Center in Hiawatha before she retired.

She was a member of the Powhattan United Methodist Church and the church women's society.

She is survived by her husband Virgil (Tarzan) Schmitt; a son Virgil K. Schmitt of Florence, Ks.; a daughter Diane Byran of Concordia, Mo; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Stapleton of Shawnee, and Rhea Schults of Atchison; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Marie loved her family and her home, was especially proud of her grandchildren. She liked to garden, cared for flowers, liked to do handwork. She was a good neighbor and friend. She will be missed by many.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning May 7, 1991, at the Brown County Mortuary in Hiawatha with Rev. Allen Baumgartner officiating. Music was "How Great Thou Art" by Merrill Womach, soloist. Pallbearers were Harlan "John" Meyer, Victor Croxton, Vernon Scheutz, Harlan Buehler, Weldon Clopton and Ron Zimmer. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
