Johann was drafted into the German military. As a sailor he traveled to the US and in 1868 he apparently jumped ship because he didn't think they, originally Danes, should have to serve in the German Army.
Johann married 'Kate' Thaem in Iowa. They had 10 children: William Arthur, Batis (Beatrice?) Theresa, George W, Dewey A, Leonard, Evelyn Mary, Chris Billy, Martha Bertha, Loretta, & Woodrow Wilson Schluter.
He died in Vail, IA in Aug 1921.
