Winston was the son of Harrison & Rebecca (East) Hall, & came of an old english family. Harrison Hall was a millwright by trade, & was among the early settlers at Springfield, Illinois. His wife died in Indiana on the long journey from North Carolina to Illinois, & he himself died shortly after the remainder of the family arrived at Springfield. Winston accompanied his parents to Illinois as a child, & while crossing the Blue Ridge Mountains witnessed the wonderful "falling star" phenomenon of 1833. He grew up in Illinois, finishing his education in the common schools of the state, & while still unmarried came to Missouri & settled in that portion of Barry County which later became Jasper County. He married there, his wife, Jane (Roberson) having gone to that region with her parents shortly before he arrived there. He settled on a farm about two and a half miles north of the site of the present city of Joplin, their home was a comfortable hewed-log house. Indians were still numerous in this portion of the country, but occasioned the settlers little trouble. Many hardships & trials incident to frontier life were to be borne, however, & the task of developing a new farm was an arduous one. After living there some time he sold this land & improved a farm of 240 acres of land purchased from the government, four miles east of Joplin, on which he resided until his death. During the Civil War they suffered much at the hands of the military bands which overran Jasper County. Farm animals belonging to them were appropriated by the marauders, & they were despoiled of much of their property.

Sometime after the death of Winston in 1863, information states that Jane went to Texas in 1865, one can only assume Williamson county, Texas, as this is where several of her children died & are buried, including William E Halls first wife Margaret (Glasscock) Hall. I have not been able to find a record of her burial in the families cemeteries as of yet. Jane passed away in Feb. 1869. DF 02/15/2011

Winston and Jane were the parents of 9 children, they were John H Hall, James N Hall, & William E Hall of Jasper county Mo, Thomas C Hall, George W Hall, Augustus H Hall, Albert W Hall, & Mrs Mary E Halley, all of Williamson county Texas & Mrs Rebecca J Ewing of Morrisville Mo.
