Neighbor's tribute to Edward Phelan
(As observed by one of his neighbors)
He was a rugged individual. He had no fancy collegiate degree,
but he was brought up out the hard knocks of experience.

He retired from long hours of pioneer farming some 20 years
ago to his hobby in a flower garden, where he grew successfully
most every botanical plant in the average seed catalogue.
He provided flowers for every church in this vicinity, not
a few but hundreds of times. He also gave beautiful bouquets to
weddings, college affairs, conventions, hospitals, private individuals
and shutins who needed cheer. He would not take financial
returns — ail that he asked was that you came back for more.

He lived a happy married life for 55 years until death took
his wife Flora. They had no children, but he doted on his many
nieces and nephews like a father.

For the last few years he lived alone and his only distractions
were watching the college students across the street grow in
wisdom and stature.

He was a great and generous man. He was meek, humble
and kind to all who called or asked for a favor. He read his Bible
daily, for he believed the beginning of wisdom was the understanding
of the word.

Edwin Franklin Phelan died unattended in his rocking chair,
his Bible at his elbow, his hands folded as in prayer and at
peace with his God. -- L. W. Johns
