John H. Horan was born in Deming, New Mexico, to John H. Horan (1850-1932) and Augusta Everitt Horan (1852-1916). His father was a railroad clerk from Texas. He grew up in Houston, Texas and became a tailor. On February 15, 1908, he married Cora Ellen Rhoden (1875-1965). They had three children: John Francis Horan (1910-1988), Augusta Elizabeth Horan Webb (1912-1999), and Linda Mamie Horan Reed (1915-1997). They had a tailor shop in Crockett, Texas and later he worked in Houston as a tailor. Divorcing Cora, he married Viola/Vila Horan and lived in Sacramento, California for 14 years where he died.
