She was born at Bournedale, Barnstable, Massachusetts on 25 June 1815, the daughter of Col. Nathan Bourne Gibbs and Salome Dillingham. They lived in what was called the "Gibbs Homestead" which once stood at the northwest corner of Old Herring Run Rd and Bournedale Rd., at the present day Carter Beal Conservation Area.

She married: 1st. Thomas Jefferson Burgess on 23 June 1833 in Bournedale, Barnstable, Massachusetts; 2nd. James D. Harris on 10 June 1846 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York and 3rd. James Waterman Ellis on 25 November 1857 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts.

She died aged 79 years and 9 months on 22 Jan 1896 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts.
