Published newspapers in the early 20th century north and west of Chicago, namely The Ciceronian (Cicero, IL), The Austinite (Austin, IL), Forest Leaves (Lake Forest, IL) and Oak Leaves (Oak Park, IL) creating the Donaldson Publishing Company. After the family moved to California, he published Holly Leaves (Hollywood, CA). Adhering to a motto accredited to Pres. Grover Cleveland, O.M. Donaldson's grave is marked "The Public Press, no less than Public Office, is a Public Trust." Orren Madison Donaldson was the son of Rev. Sylvester Donaldson, a Vermont Methodist minister, and his wife Phebe Anna Tabor, of W. Swanton, VT. O.M. met his wife Ella Marguerite Horton when she was an editorial assistant. They had three children : Sabins Tabor "Pinkie" Donaldson (1903-1992), of Indianapolis, famed driving mechanic at Indianapolis 500 events, 1930s ; Donella Lightfoot Donaldson (1910-1994) aka the Broadway actress Julie Haydon, wife of theater critic George Jean Nathan; and Miriam Elinor Donaldson (1912-1999), wife of Hollywood film editor William Hoover Ziegler, nominated three times by the Academy for film editing.
