DEATH OF R. G. WOOD

Aged and Respected Citizen Passes Away in LeRay Township, The death of R. G. Wood occurred at the home of the deceased in Le Ray Township at eleven o'clock Sunday last.

Mr. Wood was been an invalid for many years. He was afflicted with creeping paralysis which for many months rendered him practically helpless.

During the last few weeks he failed perceptibly as time went by. But he maintained nevertheless a cheerful disposition and at all times was patient and apparently resigned to the inevitable. He was a man of strong character, of rugged honesty, of high minded opinions and principles. For many years he was a loyal member of the Masonic fraternity, affiliating with the order in this place. It was ever a matter of great pride to him to defend the order and to exalt its principles before all men. Representing a high standard of morality resting fundamentally upon the eternal truths of holy writ it was his privilege and joy to accept that faith above all others as an ideal for right living and for the exemplification of righteous purposes. To his everlasting glory and honor it may be said that he never by work of deed cast a reflection upon the order or brought these principles into disrepute. Bounded by these principles which are never circumscribed in their possibilities for good or by the limits of dogmatic faith he lived the life of a just and righteous man.

Mr. Wood was a native of New York state. He was born on November 23rd, 1829 and at the time of his death was 79 years, 4 months and 28 days old. At the age of fourteen he moved with his parents to Appleton, Wisconsin. Two years later he enlisted in the Mexican War and served until its close. He was married to Miss Cobe (Phebe – sic) Howe in 1851 at Appleton, Wisconsin.. Six years later he left
Wisconsin and in company with his wife came to Minnesota, settling in Owatonna where he remained two years when he removed to the place which has since been his home and where he passed away. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and two grandsons.

The funeral will be conducted at the Episcopal church in this place today, Rev. C. E. Brandt officiating. It will be held under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, Hon. D. J. Dodge, officiating for the fraternity. The remains will be laid at rest in the Janesville cemetery.

During the acquaintance of over thirty years with the deceased, the writer leaned to value his friendship highly. In every sense he was a loyal friend and a true companion. We sincerely mourn his loss and condole with his family in
their affliction.
