Shaler Hillyer was a Major, CSA during the Civil War enlisting as a Private soldier in Mississippi and later appointed Major and Quartermaster of Selma, Alabama. He was present at the Battle of Selma. Major Hillyer was a most successful Land Agent and Cotton Broker during reconstruction. Brother George Hillyer was also a Judge and Mayor of Atlanta, Brother Eben a preeminent M.D. of his era as well as railroad president, and his Uncle and namesake Dr. Shaler Granby Hillyer was a famous religious scholar throughout the United States.
