John R. "Jack" Edwards, 88, of Rock Island, died at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, on July 4, 2008.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial will be at Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. A light luncheon will follow at the Rock Island Botanical Center, 2525 4th Ave., Rock Island. He was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
Jack was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Rock Island, a son of Frank R. and Ina Johnson Edwards. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1937, and St. Ambrose College in 1941. Jack began his 32-year career with Deere & Company as a metallurgist. After assignments at John Deere Ottumwa Works and John Deere Argentina, he returned to Metals Research in 1966 as a senior metallurgist. He was deeply involved in the utilization of steel for Deere and Company.
He was very active in several technical societies including the American National Standards Institute, where he served on their Fastener Metrication sub-committee. He also served as the president of the Central Illinois Chapter of the Society of American Value Engineers.
Survivors include his children, David (Janie) Isaacson, Bloomington, Ill., Gay (Harry) Hoyt, Davenport, Dr. Thomas (Nancy) Isaacson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Jack was the oldest of seven children and is survived by Marjorie (Robert) Riley and Frank (Rosalyn) Edwards.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Jeanne Swengel and Madeline Isaacson; his parents; and four of his siblings and their spouses, Eloise (Robert) Gloor, Thomas (Betty), James and Richard (Frances).
