Lewis Philip Deturk was born on 13 November 1836 to Isaac Hoch and Lydia nee Wagner Deturk in Pennsylvania. His biography became clearer upon reading a Commemorative Biographical Record p. 426 about his father Isaac De Turk.

The article explained that Lewis was the 8th child and had been married four times:
The first wife was Julia Ingalls that he married on 31 Mar 1859. They had one child, Eugene Deturk b 1861 who married Viola Weatherby. Julia died in 1864 when he was only 3.

The second wife was Mary Eliza Ingalls, Julia's younger sister that he married 10 May 1866. It stated she gave birth to two sons, but only one was in the records. She must have lost one child then gave birth to Charles Lewis Deturk 15 December 1868. She left Lewis and is found in the 1870 Census back with her parents, Hiram and Eleanor Ingals. She and her son moved to Butler County, Nebraska where they are both buried in The Rising Sun Cemetery.

After Eliza left Lewis married his third wife who was only 19, Mary Lucretia Cox on 4 September 1872. Two years later on 16 January 1874 she dies and is buried in the Hillsdale Cemetery in Martinsville, Indiana. There were no children by this union.

Lewis marries for the fourth and final time to Mary Emmeline Cramer who was the daughter of George and Sarah Ann nee Crawford Cramer. They were married on 20 May 1875. Together they had three children: Lydia D.Deturk b. 1877, Mabel Deturk b.1879 and Harry Deturk b. 1882. Lewis died of peritonitis on 5 June 1896 in Martinsville, Indiana. His wife remarried to a widower named Alpheus J. Kinnear on 20 November 1905. They are buried together at New South Park Cemetery in Martinsville, Indiana.
