Edward Albert Nelson, son of Andrew and Margret (Johnson) Nelson, was born March 27, 1864 in Van Buren County in Iowa. He married Alta Barbara Denning, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah (Bell) Denning, on Dec. 3, 1891 in Douds, Van Buren County, Iowa.
They had a prosperous farm in Iowa, but due to Ed's health, the doctor said he must move to a dry climate. Ed traveled to the "No Man's Land" on a land seeking excursion. He purchased two relinquishments of 160 acres each. He wrote Alta to tell her of the land, saying, "It is a wild and desolate country, and as I sit here in the house with the windows and doors shut, writing this letter, the wind has blown out the light three times. The nearest tree is seven miles. When you come, bring just what we need to get by on, and leave the nicer things at home. I don't think we can last long."
There were four children in the family when they came to Oklahoma, Letha Mary, born Feb. 7, 1894, George Edward born Nov. 20, 1896, Wilma Rachel born Nov., 18, 1905, Reva Elizabeth born Jan. 9, 1908, all were born in Douds in Van Buren county, Iowa. They had a fifth child after moving to the Panhandle. Vera Bessie "Betty" born Nov 30, 1910 in Guymon.
Ed and Alta moved to Goodwell when the children were ready to attend Panhandle A & M. At that time there were no dormitories and the young ladies lived in private homes. The Nelsons housed girls in their home in Goodwell.
Edward Nelson died at their home in Goodwell, April 24, 1937. He was buried in the Elmhiurst Cemetery in Guymon. He had two daughters who preceded him in death, Reva Elizabeth on Nov. 7, 1913 and their eldest child, Letha Mary (Bartley), who died Jan. 6, 1936
