SMELTZER, Joseph
We are sorry to report the sudden death of one of our aged and respected citizens, Mr. Joseph Smeltzer. He had been in failing health for several years, but was still able to do light work.
On Tuesday, March 24, his daughter-in-law, Mrs. John [Virginia Hannah Gates] Smeltzer, of McKeesport, Pa., who has been visiting friends in this vicinity, was invited to dine with Mr. Smeltzer's granddaughter, Mrs. C. W. Myers. Mr. Smeltzer was invited also. During the forenoon he appeared to be very much contented and in good spirits.
After partaking a hearty dinner, he crossed the street to Mr. A. Z. Pote's store, where also is the post office. After inquiring for his mail he sat down on a bench and was conversing with some of his neighbors when he threw his head back and expired. Those present thought he had fainted and carried him out in the air, but his spirit had already taken its flight to meet Him who had given it.
Mr. Smeltzer was born in Woodbury, now Bloomfield, township, Bedford county, April 21, 1822, where he resided all his life. He was always ready to do an errand or help a friend in need. He was respected by all and had no one to speak evil about him. In political affairs he was a democrat and, although the opposite party is strong in a majority, he held many times prominent township offices.
He was married twice. The first time to Miss Susan Barley which union was blessed with five children: John, of McKeesport; Joseph of Michigan; Mrs. Sarah Stephens, of North Dakota; George, of Taylor township, and Mrs. J. Z. Pote, of this place.
His second wife was Mrs. Mary Harker, the mother of Mrs. C. W. Zook and Mrs. G. E. Harker, of Roaring Spring, who bore him six children. Two died early in life and another, Mrs. John Teeter, died two years ago. The following survive: Michael, of St. Clairsville; Franklin, of Everett, Washington state, and Rudolph, of Bakers Summit, with whom Mr. Smeltzer resided since the death of his wife.
Besides his children there are 46 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren living. We know that we shall miss Grandpa as we all called him, and hope our loss will be his gain in the celestial world where all is bliss and where care and trouble was never known. Funeral services were held in the Brethren church at Bakers Summit, conducted by Rev. John Holsinger assisted by Rev. Fred Dively.
Interment in Holsinger cemetery. The deceased was aged 81 years, 11 months and 3 days.
