Prominent Merchant Dies Suddenly
The citizens of Grand Island and community in general were grieved to learn of the sudden death of one of the city's most prominent business men, A. W. Sterne, which occurred while on a vacation trip to Excelsior Springs, Mo. News of the death was received by Mr. Woolstenholm, brother of Mrs. Stearn, early Wednesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Sterne, accompanied by their daughter, Mabel had left Grand Island just recently for the southern resort in the interest of his health. . . Mr. Sterne was one of eight children and was born in Germany. He came to this country in 1879, locating in Missouri and lived at Clinton with his brother, Benjamin, until 1887, when he came to Grand Island for a visit. A year later, he located here and became associated with Mr. Woolstenholm in the clothing business, occupying a store room in the present vicinity of the Beegle store. . .and at the time of his death. . . occupied the ground floor of the Hedde building at Third and Locust streets. Mr. Sterne was active in republican politics. . and was a delegate from this state to the national convention in 1908. . .. also served as councilman of the second ward. . .

His marriage to Miss Nettie Woolstenholm took place in 1891 [sic]. Two children were born to this union, Ruth L., the wife of Raymond H. Thurston, who preceded her father in death about two years ago and Mabel Henrietta, who is connected with the Sterne clothing store. The bereaved widow and daughter, as also a brother, Benjamin of California, and two sisters, Mrs. Pollock and Mrs. Simons of Chicago, survive him. The body was brought to this city for burial, arriving here at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held from the home, 816 West Second street at ...p.m. Friday, the Rev. J. N. MacKenzie, rector of St. Stephens's Episcopal church having charge of the services. Interment will take place in the Grand Island cemetery.
