Deuel, farmer, was born Nov. 10, 1816, in New York State, son of Philip and Sarah (Babcock), natives of Connecticut; came to Farmington in 1837; learned the cooper's trade, but is now a farmer, owning 180 acres of land. Democrat. Has been School Director, Road Commissioner, Town Clerk and Mayor of Farmington two terms. Nov. 8, 1840 he married Clara A. Porter, daughter of Col. Porter, and they have two boys and 2 girls."

Edwin G. Deuel's sketch..."His father, Joseph E. Deuel, is a native New York State. The latter was a pioneer of Fulton County, coming as early as 1837 to this part of the State, later locating in Salem Town, Knox County, in 1840. There he lived until 18?? when he returned to Fulton County and remained until 1883. At that date he removed to California settling at Santa Anna, Los Angeles
County. He has a small farm in that State, but lives a retired life, enjoying the results of past years of labor. Mrs. Deuel was Clarissa Porter, a native of New York."
When Joseph died in 1889, his estate was valued at $60,000. Clarissa A. Deuel was the only heir named in probate. (Early California Wills, online)
