Allen Frederick Cordts of Durham passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, of complications from an ongoing illness.

Born on January 18, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY, Allen was the son of Herman and Lillian Cordts. After growing up in Jamaica, NY, Allen joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. Following the war, Allen was married to Anna P. Jerlstrom in 1948 and pursued his education under the G.I. Bill. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict.

Allen was a graduate of Alfred University earning a B.A. in 1949. He received his Master's degree from Northwestern University (IL), and finished his Ed.D. at Columbia University Teachers' College (NY) in 1954. His first career was as a university administrator, serving in various capacities at the University of Florida, Central Michigan University, North Carolina Wesleyan College, and McMurry College in Abilene, TX. In 1976, Allen and his family moved to Durham where he assumed an administrative position with the Durham Public Safety Department. He retired from his work with the city in 1990.

A good and humble man, Allen is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anne, and two sons, David P. Cordts of Reston, VA, and Paul D. Cordts of Greensboro, four grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Edna C. Lyle, of Clarksville, TN who died in 1996.

A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, November 14 at 2 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, 3002 Hope Valley Rd., Durham, NC where Allen was an active member of the choir since 1976. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Epworth United Methodist Church in Allen's name or to the charity of your choice .
