Herbert Brown (100294832)

Herbert Brown, 95, a retired farmer of Orofino, died of causes related to age Wednesday at Clearwater Valley Hospital here.

He was born March 16, 1904, to Orlando and Ida Tholstrup Brown in Gilbert, Idaho.

He grew up on the family ranch at Gilbert, working the ranch with his family as a young man.

In 1922 he began driving trucks for Tom Nygard in the Orofino area.

He married Winiford Dry in 1926.

In 1928, he began driving for Stonebreaker Construction in Cascade.

From 1934 to 1935 he worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Payette.

He returned to the family ranch in Gilbert in 1935 and farmed there and in Greencreek until 1964. He and his wife divorced in 1950.

In 1954 he married Mary T. Geis in Lewiston. They lived at the Gilbert ranch. They moved to Orofino in 1963 and he worked for the Riverside Mill and the Clearwater County road department. He also worked for the CTPA, Cliffs Auto Saw and Cycle and Riverside Sewer and Water until retiring in 1983.

His wife died in April 1994 and he continued to live in Orofino.

He loved to hunt, fish, work in the garden and repair lawn equipment.

Survivors include three sons, Sid Brown and Ted Brown, both of Orofino, and Merle Brown of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; a daughter, Dorthea Wilks of LaGrande, Ore.; two stepsons, Edward Wassmuth of Greencreek and Jerry Wassmuth of Lewiston; two stepdaughters, Donna Fuchs and Judy Kimberling, both of Lewiston; 24 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and a stepson, Vern Wassmuth.

Visitation will be today from 3 to 6 p.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. Rosary will be recited at a vigil service Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the funeral chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orofino by the Rev. George King.

Burial will follow at the Greencreek Cemetery.
