Marshall was born Daniel Clarence or Clerence Phinazee and that seems to have been his legal name his entire life. His WW I draft registration gives his name as Daniel Clerence, and his death certificate gives his name as D C Phinazee.
He gave his name as Marshall Phinazee on the 1910 and 1920 US Censuses, reverting to D C Phinazee for the 1930 US Census, the last one he appeared on before passing in 1936.
