Elisha Demoulin, for nearly a half century a resident of Madison county, died at 3:30 yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Rogier, at Patoka IL. Deceased attained the advanced age of 83 years, 10 months and 28 days. The funeral took place at 1 o'clock this afternoon, services being conducted in the Bethany Baptist church, Sebastopol, by Rev. Hodge, assisted by Rev. Warren E. Wise, of Greenville. Interment was in Gullick cemetery.
Elisha Demoulin, a native of France was born on October 8, 1832. At the age of 18, in company with his parents and family, and his brother, Nathaniel, he sailed for America.
Landing at New Orleans the latter part of 1850 the party started northward on the Mississippi for St. Louis. The mother, her daughter, Mrs. Poulin, and the latter's daughter were seized with cholera and died enroute. The body of Mrs. Demoulin was buried in the river, while the remains of her daughter and granddaughter were brought to Alton for interment. The remaining members of the family set out from Alton for Highland to join the little French colony already located here. On the trip the elder Demoulin was stricken with the plague and he too succumbed.
Here in Highland on April 10, 1852, deceased was united in marriage with Miss Marie Sordet. The couple took up their home in Jamestown IL, where Mr. Demoulin followed the trade of blacksmith. They continued to reside there until 1872 when they moved to Sebastopol, where deceased conducted a general store, which he purchased in 1881. Of eight children born to the union five survive. They are Edmond, of Los Angeles, Cal, Erastus and Ulysses, of Greenville, Mrs. Clara Zilles, of Sebastopol and Mrs. Eva Rogier, of Patoka. Mrs. Demoulin died in February 1908. Since which time Mr. Demoulin has made his home with his children.
In his earlier years deceased took an active interest in musical affairs, and for a long period served as director of the Sebastopol Band. He was a genial, whole-souled gentleman and his home was the personification of hospitality. His was a well spent life. May exceeding peace be his reward.

Highland Journal Sept 7, 1916

In August 1900 he sold his stock of merchandise from his general store to Samuel Friedmann of Breese, the deal marked his retirement.
