Thomas, a physician originally from Knox County, Kentucky, & young wife Nannie as Nancy (she only began using the nickname permanently after 1880) only appeared on one census together, 1870 after four years of marriage in Precinct 7, Mercer County, Kentucky, before the birth of their daughter in 1874, "Eunice" Sallie Eunice Smith 1874-1955 (later Mrs George Lucien Lyne 1876-1955). Thomas died unexpectedly the year after their only child's birth. They had been married nine years. He was a month shy of 39. His bereft wife Nannie returned to live with her parents with their little girl in Bergin, Mercer County, Kentucky. 


She died almost 50 years later, but

"Nannie" Nancy Eunice née Hughes Smith are both resting in Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky. 


Their daughter "Eunice" Sallie Eunice née Smith Lyne rests in Lexington, Kentucky.
