Artist and Minister of Religion, he introduced stained glass windows in United States churches.Although born in England, he was the second son of a wealthy Savannah, Georgia, merchant, Robert Bolton, who later became an ordained minister and the founder of Christ Church in Pelham, New York. His mother, Anne Jay was the daughter of the Evangelical minister William Jay. His grandfather was a stonemason of note and his work at churches no doubt inspired young William's interest in churches because he would often accompany his grandfather. He was educated at an Evangelical school in Mill Hill in north London and then he went up to Cambridge University. His parents and grandparents were aquainted with many famous artists including William Etty all of whom no doubt encouraged young William with his artistic talents which had begun with sketching of stained glass windows. In 1836 the family moved to Pelham in Westchester County, New York where William was introduced to Samuel Finley Breese Morse as a result of which he became his student at the National Academy of Design. His first major window was for Christ Church at Pelham where his father was rector, and this was the first figural stained glass window made in the United States. This window led to his finest work at the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn, New York. He returned to England around 1845 to open a glass staining studio in Cambridge. His wife died and he stopped working on stained glass to become a Minister of Religion.
