During the disastrous epidemic of Spanish influenza (as it was called at the time) in 1918, a long time friend and neighbor of Lew and Lizzie by the name of Dell Crosby lost an 18 year old son and his wife in a weeks time, leaving Dell with six small children, including a five week old baby by the name of Dean Alvin. Lew and Lizzie took this baby to raise with the provision that his name remain Crosby. Dean was raised in the family much as if he had been one of the Hesalroad children. He was raised in Butler Co., Iowa.

He married first -- Hazel Dulin on 13 Apr 1937. They had 2 children. Their son, Paul born on 19 Apr 1943 was killed in an accident.
