Eugene Elias Contrubis, 62, of 162 Kiswick Street, Midland Beach, NY tragically passed away on Monday, October 29, 2012. He refused to evacuate his home and drowned in his home during the storm surge of Hurricane Sandy.

He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to Manhattan as a teenager. He attended Charles Evans Hughes High School in Manhattan and enlisted in the U.S. Army following his graduation.

After his service, he worked as a corrections officer with the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility for five years. Eugene was a retired Police Department clerk who worked in Manhattan's 7th Precinct on the Lower East Side for about 25 years.

Although he never married or had any children but he had a loving disposition and was well-liked by everyone he met. He was a frail, soft-spoken, kind and gentle soul. Eugene loved taking trips to Vegas, wrote poetry, enjoyed chess, watched comedies and adored his nieces. When they were children, he hung a swing from a tree in his yard for them to play on.

Visitation was offered on Monday, November 5, 2012 from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM followed by a private funeral mass officiated at 12:30 PM in the Colonial Funeral Home, 2819 Hylan Boulevard, New Dorp, NY 10306. Entombment followed at Moravian Cemetery, 2205 Richmond Road, New Dorp, NY 10306.
