Marie Helena (nee Hart) Colborne, 66, of Great Kills, died on Thursday, November 1, 2012 while trying to escape the storm surge of Hurricane Sandy.

She was born in Manhattan, grew up in Richmond and briefly lived in Japan during her youth before returning to Staten Island.

Marie taught science in several Staten Island middle schools, including Markham in Graniteville and Laurie in New Springville before retiring several years ago. She also worked at the former Saint Vincent's Medical Center as a respiratory therapist. Marie graduated from the former Richmond College, where she earned a master's degree in education.

She owned and managed Belaire Motors BMW in Richmond from 1986 until it closed in the early 1990s.

Walter was the love of her life. Her family will always remember her love of life and her advice and guidance. Marie's favorite expression was you need to buck up. They will both be forever missed.

She enjoyed visiting Atlantic City, traveling and watching movies.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Marie Mikkelsen; a brother, Henry Hart; two sisters, Helena Jacobsen and Jeannette Anderson, and 3 grandchildren.

A memorial service was offered on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 2 PM in the Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Boulevard, Mid Island, NY 10314. Arrangements included cremation.
