The funeral for former Emporian John William Garriott, 66 of Kansas City, Mo., will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Charter Funerals-Emporia Chapel. The Rev. Peter Rupprecht will conduct the service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter in Kansas City, Mo., or the American Cancer Society and sent in care of the funeral home, 501 W. Sixth Ave., Emporia, KS 66801.
Mr. Garriott died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at St. Luke's Northland Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
John William Garriott, the son of Harvey Leroy and Gladys Pearl Babcock Garriott, was born Sept. 4, 1936, at Emporia. He married Suzanne McCord on Jan. 12, 1959, at Emporia. She survives.
He owned and operated the Kerr-McGee Service Station in Emporia and later owned and operated South-Side Auto Sales in Austin, Texas. After he retired, he did maintenance work for people with developmental disabilities.
Mr. Garriott is also survived by one son, Shawn Garriott of El Dorado; one daughter, Lisa Adams of Kansas City, Mo.; and six grandchildren.
A brother, Floyd Garriott, died earlier.
