"Henry B. Northup! Thank God--thank God!"
This is a quote by Solomon Northup from his 1853 book TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE, Chapter XXI. According to the book, New York law allowed the state to pay for Henry B. Northup to go into the South and rescue Solomon from slavery, which he had been kidnapped and sold into twelve years earlier. Solomon was born free as his father was given his freedom from slavery in a will prior to New York abolishing slavery. Henry B. Northup was a relative of the man who had owned Solomon's father as a slave and who had freed him.
