After retiring, Thomas worked as a guard at the Schuylkill county prison for 10 years. He later was a bus and van driver for R&J Transportation Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Pottsville. Thomas was a member of Legion Post 286, Cressona, where he served as an officer. He was also a member of Second Mountain Gun Club, AMVETS, Summit Station, and was a charter member of the Gear Grinders. He loved classic cars, building model airplanes, air shows and classic rock music.
