1935 Rockdale Fire

Rockdale, Texas, Sept. 3. -- Two volunteer firemen lost their lives in a $100,000 fire which razed a store building in the business district early today. A metal awning on the front of the building collapsed and crushed to death J. Wesley Hooper, 35, and Wilbur Williams, 21, while they were fighting the blaze. The fire broke out at the grocery department and spread rapidly to clothing and other branches of the rambling one-story building, which covered half a block. It was brought under control at dawn.
