A Virtual Cemetery created by A. L. Parrish

Daughter's of Zion (DOZ)

The Daughter's of Zion Cemetery (DOZ) was founded by a charitable society for African American women of the same name in 1873. The cemetery is also referred to as the "Society Cemetery" or the "Church Hill Cemetery." One of the earliest gravestones that can be read today is five-year-old Annie Buckner, who died in April 1873. There are 179 markers standing as of 2003. The last burial took place in 1995, but the majority of burials took place prior to the 1930s. In the 1970s, decades after the demise of the original organization, the city of Charlottesville assumed responsibility for the upkeep of the graveyard.
