Germantown Community Center Fire - January 11, 1928

A fire gutted the Germantown Community Centre, located at Haines and Morton Streets in the Little Italy section of Germantown, in northwest Philadelphia, PA. The story made the front page of Philadelphia newspapers for days. During evacuation efforts, six girls became trapped on a metal balcony on the third-floor of the building which was enclosed by wire mesh which, incidentally, was put there to keep the children from falling into the street. Firefighters scrambled to cut the wire, but by the time they did the girls were overcome with smoke and suffered severe burns over more than half of their bodies.
