Janet was the 8th of 8 children to James Gorrie (1787-1834) and Janet Weatherspoom (1790-?) of Scotland
- she eloped with Richard Prouse and they married in the goldfields of Victoria, Australia on Richard's 21st birthday, 4 October 1852

- they had 12 children:
* James Prouse 2 Oct 1853 in Wainuiomata (2 days before Richard's 22nd birthday) - 11 Oct 1921 in Levin aged 68
