Son of Jack Finnelly Sr. and Grace Gordon.

Jack was visiting his maternal grandparents while his mother was in Spokane visiting and his father was the foreman at the CCC Camp in Darby, Montana.

Jack and his friend Dick Jenkins left for a hike, each carrying a firearm. Jack stopped to clear mud from the sights of the six-shot revolver he was carrying when the gun went off, hitting him in the chest. He was carried to his grandparents' house and died only moments after reaching there.

Jack's father quit his job as foreman late that November and filed for divorce from Grace that December on grounds of desertion.
