Catherine had been ill for some time before her death, including having trouble eating and sleeping. The effects of this illness on her mental health, coupled with the stress her illness brought upon her marriage, caused Catherine to take her husband's life and then her own.

They had come to Montana from Philadelphia in 1913 for William's health.
