FATALITY ON HUTT ROAD
A fatal accident occurred on the Hutt road about half-past 8 o'clock last night, resulting in the untimely death of Mrs May Sandilands Thomson, wife of James(sic) Thomson, a well known farmer of Wainui-o-mata. The accident was discovered by Dr Baker, of the Lower Hutt and Mr Sykes, chemist, of Petone, who were walking to the Lower Hutt, when the came upon an express wagon lying overturned on the roadside, not far from Dr Wilford's residence, whilst a man was vainly endeavouring to release the horse from the shafts. They assisted him to do this, and, learning that his name was William Thomson, and that his mother was with him on the vehicle when the accident happened, search was made, and Mrs Thomson was found lying beneath the express, which contained a load of timber. Finding that they could not raise the express unaided, word was sent to the Lower Hutt, and several of the employees at Cudby's stables hastened to the spot and lent their assistance. When the vehicle and timber were lifted, and Mrs Thomson was released, it was found that life was extinct, she having apparently been crushed to death. The body was removed to a private house near at hand, to await an inquest. The accident is said to have occurred through a wheel of the express getting into the ditch on the roadside, the driver, William Thomson, missing the road in the darkness of the night. Inspector Thomson has forwarded a report of the sad occurrence to Mr Eb. Baker, Coroner, who will hold an inquest on the remains at the Lower Hutt at 4 o'clock this afternoon. The deceased was about 60 years of age and she and her family are well-known in the Hutt district
