Thomas Nelson,80, who led an interesting life as a sailor on the ocean and Great Lakes, died Thursday evening (Feb. 19, 1931) at his home, 1449 S. Tenth St.
Mr. Nelson was born in Arendale, Norway on Sept 23, 1850. When he was 13 years old he began sailing on the inland waters and later on the ocean, having crossed the waters to this country several times. Mr. Nelson had been in several shipwrecks on the ocean. During one voyage he fell and sustained a broken leg.
The aged man came to America 45 years ago. He sailed on the Great Lakes and in 1908 traveled aboard the schooner R.H. Becker, which was wrecked near the Sheboygan harbor. Mr. Nelson was the last man on the schooner and nearly lost his life. After that he sailed for one more season with the Charles Anderson and then gave up sailing due to his health.
For several years Mr. Nelson was employed at the Sheboygan Novelty Co. and later with the Northern Furniture Co.. He retired from active work 4 years ago. His first wife preceded him in death and some time later he married Anna Olson Jerving, which occurred March 10, 1894.
He is survived by his wife, three sons, Nels of Chattanooga, TN, John of Cottage Grove, WI, and Theodore of Detroit, MI, and by one daughter, Mrs. Geneva Lindemann, this city. Seven grandchildren, one brother in New York, and one sister in Norway aslo survive.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ramm Funeral Home, and at 2 o'clock at Our Savior's Church. Rev. Walter Laesch will officiate and interment will bbe at Wildwood Cemetery.
