Formerly known as Stefan Czachla.

A Sergeant and Pilot in the Polish Air Force, he subsequently joined the RAF (changing his surname to Curtis) and attained the rank of Warrant Officer (sn: 782696). He served with 306 Squadron RAF and was part of Operation Jubilee, providing air cover for the raid on Dieppe, France 1942. However, on returning from the raid his aircraft (Spitfire Mk Vb; AD581; UZ-M) ran out of fuel and he was injured after hitting the roof of 252 Malvern Avenue, Northolt while trying to land.

On 27 September 1943, while he was acting as a pilot instructor at 16(P) Service Flying Training School, his aircraft (Miles Magister III; sn W8710) collided in mid-air with another aeroplane of the same unit (Miles Magister III; sn DL612). Although he managed to parachute to safety, his pupil, Leading Aircraftman Tadeusz Eret, was killed in the incident.
