Clifton Harper services today
Clifton E. Harper, who started the Minden Press on Nov. 17, 1949 and was affiliated with the newspaper until 1956, died Friday, April 2 at 9:12 p.m. in the Minden Medical Center.
He was 80.
Funeral services for the Mississippi native will be at 3 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church of Minden with Rev. Ronnie Laughlin officiating.
Burial will be in the Old Minden Cemetery under direction of Pinelands Funeral Home of Homer.
Harper graduated from Minden High School. He received his bachelors degree from Baylor and his masters degree from LSU. He began working on his doctorate at the University of Missouri but left when the school was closed because of World War II. He taught journalism for one year at the University of Montana, and then was hired by the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia in Athens. He taught there for eight years.
In 1949 he came to Minden and established the Minden Press. In 1956 he sold the newspaper.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Minden and the Minden Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Buckley Harper, Minden; one daughter, Elizabeth H. Edmonds, Minden; and two granddaughters, Cindy Harrison and Karen Edmonds, both of Minden.
